Wine Cellars: A vintage improvement to your home

By Charles Richardson

Over the past few years a growing trend with homeowners has been to add luxury features to an existing home design: exotic bathroom spas, fire pits by the swimming pool, and outdoor kitchens, to name a few. One of the more popular enhancements has been the addition of a wine cellar. According to The Realty Times, the popularity of wine cellars can be traced, logically enough, to a growing connoisseur mindset among homeowners to collect and store wine. Dream home. The name implies perfection. Of course, rule number one about building your dream home is realizing that there is no such thing as a perfect home. Recognizing that on the front end will save you a lot of heartache and frustration. Now, that’s not to say that you can’t get very close, or that you can’t enjoy the building process—you can, on both counts. The key is remaining open-minded and flexible. That applies whether you’re building a new home, or buying a home and renovating it to your specifications. Either way, your “ideal home” plans will likely require unexpected changes and alterations.

Here are a few things to consider as you begin the process of making your dream home a reality:

Square Footage: Less is more in 2015

Up until the last few years, homeowners were obsessed with square footage. “We need a bigger house,” was the motto of many. In the minds of young married couples in particular, bigger was better. The rationale being as our family grows, so does our need for additional square footage and extra rooms. And while some still subscribe to that notion, many young families are getting creative to show that it’s not so much the square footage that’s important—it’s what you do with it.
