Farmhouse Home Design

By Charles Richardson

The farmhouse home design has been an increasingly popular trend  over the past few years. Americans, seemingly of every age and interest, have been drawn to the idyllic image and pastoral simplicity that it evokes. As for the term, farmhouse was derived originally as a description of location rather than style. A farmhouse was basically any home built on a vast expanse of land or large agricultural tract. Over time the simple, no-nonsense design elements typical of such a rural dwelling were exemplified by an unpretentiousness and functionality that city dwellers adopted as a matter of practical taste.

What characterizes a farmhouse home design?

Farmhouse home plans are as varied as the agrarian settings that originally inspired them. Some of the more consistent themes, however, are high, pitched gabled roofs and wide, generous porches that often wrapped around from front-to-back. The no-frills design elements create a relaxed air of informality. At Donald A. Gardner Architects, our farmhouse house plans complement the traditional feel and layout of the American farmhouse motif, yet are adorned with modern amenities and conveniences that most families desire. “Most of our farmhouse plans include natural elements with modern interior layouts,” says Donald A. Gardner’s Chuck Tripp. “What you get is that classic, nostalgic farmhouse look with thoroughly modern creature comforts, giving you the best of both worlds.”

The wrap-around porches and open floor plans of a farmhouse design have been part of my home-owning dreams since I was little. I always loved the idea of being able to sit out on the porch and listen to a summer thunderstorm. It looks like the farmhouse style is the best for me. Thank you for sharing!

My husband and I want to have some builders build us a new home next year. We are still trying to decide on the type of house that we want, but we really like the farmhouse design. My favorite characteristic of this type of design is the open floor plans, because I love to have a lot of space and to have everything easily accessible. However, do you know whether or not a farmhouse design would be more cost-effective than a more modern design?

Hi Faylinn, We are not involved in the building process so I can’t really advise about the cost to build a home. In general, the exterior design can make a big difference in building costs. Simple lines and lower roof pitches are more affordable than steep roofs, customer details, and angles or curves.
