Read about how DeVille Construction, Inc. adapted this hillside walkout Don Gardner home design to suit an extremely sloped lakefront lot in Estill Springs, Tennessee:

The lot sloped sharply to the rear; so sharply, in fact, that if built as designed, the basement level would have hovered high above the ground. Making it a true walkout would have placed it 23 feet below the main level, with a staircase that went on and on. Parker quickly realized that this problem could be turned into an opportunity by adding a mezzanine level between the ground floor and the basement. He sketched it out for the [homeowners], taking out the powder bath on the first floor and putting in a 5-foot-by-5-foot elevator shaft to make it easier to get around.
