As an added value to builders, developers and other industry professionals, Donald A. Gardner Architects, Inc. now offers vellum and CD house plan packages with a standard “unlimited license to build.”

By purchasing a Donald A. Gardner home design on reproducible vellum or AutoCAD CD, the purchaser may make an unlimited number of copies as needed to build the home an unlimited number of times. Five-set bond and eight-set bond plan packages (home plans printed on paper media) are still available with a one-time license to build. Paper sets may not be copied or reproduced.

Buying house plans on vellum or CD gives the buyer flexibility to modify the home for local code requirements or for personalized changes. When a home plan is modified, the newly created design is considered a derivative of the original copyrighted home design. This is true regardless of the number of changes or modifications made to the house plan. Donald A. Gardner Architects, Inc. still retains the home design copyright, and should be indicated as copyright owner on modified house plans.

The unlimited license to build is only granted to the purchaser of the house plans and may not be transferred or sold to a third party at any time. All house plan companies have their own policies regarding licenses to build their home designs. Ignoring these policies may violate the house designers’ copyright. Be aware of the copyright policies you are agreeing to when you purchase a house plan.
